Non-Cash Gifts

  • Appreciated Stock and Other Appreciated Securities

When you make a gift of appreciated securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have grown in value), your income tax deduction is equal to the fair market value of the securities and you may avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciated value.

Gifts of "capital gain property" assets such as stocks that have increased in value and that you have owned for at least one year and a day are deductible at full current value subject to a limit of 30 percent of adjusted gross income.

If your charitable deduction exceeds this limit in any given year, it may be carried forward to the following year. The deduction for a very large gift may be carried forward and deducted in as many as five additional years.

Consult your financial advisor before making a decision that impacts your taxes.

  • Gifts of Real Estate

Real estate can be contributed as a current outright gift or an estate gift. All gifts of real estate, such as a residence, farm undeveloped land, vacation home, or commercial property should be discussed with the Missouri 4-H Foundation staff.

If your goal is to make a gift of an asset no longer needed while generating an income tax deduction, a gift of real estate may be a good option for you.

Benefits of making a gift of real estate:

  • Immediate income tax deduction
  • Reduction or elimination of capital gains tax

Additional Ways to Give

As we plan for the next sixty years, and address the challenges of rising costs and new programming needs, we have developed strategies to help ensure permanent support for Missouri 4-H state programs.

You can establish an endowment at the Missouri 4-H Foundation to provide support for a Missouri 4-H Youth Development program, a post-secondary scholarship, or an unrestricted fund to support the greatest needs of Missouri 4-H as they arise. Endowment funds ensure that generations of Missouri 4-H youth will have the opportunity to experience positive youth development.

You can provide lasting support for the Missouri 4-H Foundation through your will or estate plan. We strongly suggest you consult with both your legal advisor and a Missouri 4-H Foundation representative before making such a gift.

Make a tribute or memorial to remember special people in your life for anniversaries, awards, birthdays, new arrivals, times of sympathy and other special occasions. Tributes and memorials are acknowledged to whomever you designate, without reference to the size of the gift.

Now you can make tax-free gifts from your individual retirement account (IRA). Known as the charitable IRA rollover, you can make annual gifts to the Missouri 4-H Foundation from your IRA this year and well into the future because of recent changes in tax law.

Kids Helping Kids provides financial grants to 4-H members and their families who have been affected by natural disasters, medical emergencies or fires. The fund consists of contributions from 4-H members, clubs, families, volunteers and alumni in Missouri.

Now it is easier than ever to support the Missouri 4-H Foundation. Thanks to our partnerships with Schnucks, Gerbes, Amazon and Missouri Life Magazine, a portion of your purchase will be donated to the Missouri 4-H Foundation.

The Monsanto Fund's "America's Farmers Grow Communities" program annually offers local 4-H programs in more than 1,300 counties in 39 states, including 72 in Missouri, the opportunity to receive $2,500 in unrestricted funding if they are designated as a recipient by a participating farmer. Clubs are encouraged to reach out and persuade local farmers to apply on their behalf.
