Scrapie Identification Program

4-H and FFA members showing in lamb and goat projects, the Scrapie identification program affects you and the lambs or goats you show!

What is Scrapie?

Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of sheep and goats.  There is no cure and there is no treatment.  Go to the web page for more details.  http://www.animalagriculture.org/scrapie/Scrapie.htm

What you need to know.

If you buy a show lamb or goat, other than castrated males, regardless of age, be sure it has an official USDA Scrapie identification tag in its ear when you buy it!   If there is not a Scrapie ID tag in the ear, insist that the producer get one.

If you raise your lamb or goat, be sure to get Scrapie id tags from USDA.  Call 1-866-USDA-TAG and register for the Scrapie Eradication program.  USDA supplies the tags and one applicator for free.
