Purpose of Demonstrations
  • Demonstrations will help members
    • acquire & relate project knowledge
    • learn & logically organize ideas
    • develop self-confidence
    • develop & display physical skills
    • develop public speaking skills

Getting Started!
  • Think of demonstrations as “advanced show & tell”
  • Have members start by repeating a skill you have shown them
  • Ask members to “tell” what they are doing and why as they “show” others the skill they have learned

Demonstration Types
  • Demonstrations
    • show & tell how to do something
    • have a finished product at the end
  • Illustrated Talks
    • show & tell how to do something
    • will not have an actual finished product at the end; will have picture, poster or model instead
  • Working Demonstrations
    • show & tell as audience asks for information
    • no formal presentation

  • Introduction - include
    • catchy title on a poster
    •  member information
    • why topic is important
    • what will be shown
  • Equipment /Supplies
    • may be a recipe or list of items needed
    • posters helpful


  • Steps to Take
    • show  & tell how  to make item
    • explain steps in logical order
    • tell why
    • keep workspace organized
    • show  finished item
  • Summarize
  • Length:  5- 8 minutes

  • Differences:
    • no real finished product at the end
    • rely on posters, models or  pictures instead of actual objects
  • When used - -
    • real objects are too big or live animals not allowed

Working Demonstration Format
  • Informal presentation
    • audience comes & goes
    • 4-Her presents information in answer to audience questions
    • member asks on-lookers if they have questions or would
       like to try the skill themselves

  • Explaining Steps
    • use posters listing steps
    • have product samples in several stages
    • use diagrams or drawings
    • be prepared to re-explain several times as new people arrive
  • Length of demonstration
    • 30 min. to 1 hr.

State Fair Demonstration Awards
  • Winning demonstrations in special categories may be eligible to win cash, plaques, or trips
  • Refer to the “Specialty Contests” pages near the back of the “Clover” for a complete listing of contest rules

  • Additional reasons 4-Hers will thank you later for this encouragement:
    • many high school courses require demonstrations or presentations
