Resources for Youth & Adult Partners
  • The Power of an Untapped Resource: Exploring Youth Representation on Your Board or Committee - this manual was compiled by an Alaskan teen for any group that is interested in expanding representation, "growing their own" board members for tomorrow, and/or empowering the youth in their community.  An increasing number of previously adult-only boards are soliciting youth involvement.  This resource is designed to address the questions adult board members may be asking.
  • Making It Work: A Guide to Successful Youth-Adult Partnerships - this publication from the Texas Network for Youth Services is geared toward helping youth and adults find success in partnering together in their communities.  It includes sections on fundamentals of YAPs, forming and sustaining YAPs, and recognizing and working through barriers.

Resources for Local Governing Officials
  • Promoting Youth Participation - this action kit, published by the National League of Cities, offers municipal leaders a look at the importance of youth participation in public decision-making, and models and strategies cities are using to create a space for youth at the table.  Provides ways municipal leaders can promote youth participation within their own communities.

  • Building Effective Youth Councils: A Practical Guide to Engaging Youth in Policy Making - offers policy makers a rationale, six keys to effective youth councils, and resources to assist with planning and implementing initiatives to involve young people.

  • Building Community presents an asset-based approach to creating positive community change. This took kit outlines a process for youth and adults to explore community resources by creating united visions and translating them into plans.  The process includes building readiness, visioning and planning, implementation, and change and sustainability components upon which to base any community change effort.  The BC process has been tested widely with groups and organizations , including native, indigenous, and international communities.  The tools are adaptable for rural, urban and suburban environments.  Available from the Innovation Center: $59.99 + shipping/handling.

  • Youth-Adult Partnerships: A Training Manual - provides activities and resources for guiding youth and adults in your group or organization through a process of partnering for community change.  The sections are organized to encourage trainers and facilitators to use their unique style to create sessions that meet the learning objectives of participants.  Most of the training exercises can be used solo or grouped with other exercises.  Available from the Innovation Center: $39.99 + shipping/handling.

  • 15 Points: Successfully Involving Youth in Decision-Making - this resource makes the case for why youth participation is an opportunity for every organization, and walks groups through a step-by-step process for determining the right model for participation, helping adult decision-makers get ready for partnering with youth, and making sure groups have a solid plan in place for recruiting, orienting, and mentoring new youth members.  Available from Youth on Board: $29.95 + shipping/handling.
  • At the Table - this website is devoted to "building the movement for youth in decision-making," and serves as a portal to various resources for youth and youth practitioners, including a youth voice database, surveys/polls, discussion groups, and upcoming events.
