In tough economic times, Missouri communities across the state benefit when their youth have leadership skills, healthy habits and a lot of class. 243 youth delegates attended the 2009 Missouri 4-H Teen Conference, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, at Columbia’s Stoney Creek Inn. During this University of Missouri Extension conference, youth ages 11-13 built stronger leadership skills, increased their knowledge of healthy lifestyles, learned the finer points of etiquette and became informed about opportunities to experience other international cultures. The theme of the conference was “4-H…We’ve Got Class.”

In addition to fun and learning, Teen Conference delegates took part in a “silver rush,” donating coins for the Kids Helping Kids fund which is used to assist Missouri 4-H families experiencing hardship due to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances. In all, 4-H members raised $302.72 for the Kids Helping Kids.

The conference ended with a visit from Miss Missouri 2008 Lacey Fitzgerald who spoke about the importance of making good choices and being oneself instead of simply trying to fit in. After the event, Miss Missouri stayed for more than an hour to sign autographs and pose for pictures with delegates.

The State 4-H Teen Conference is planned and facilitated by the older teens of the Missouri State 4-H Council and helps young people learn about the many 4-H opportunities that await them as teenagers.
