STURGEON, Mo. – University of Missouri student Kassie Rankin donated the proceeds from her 2018 Boone County Fair market lamb to raise money for the Camp CA-POW First Generation Scholarship. Rankin is a 10-year member of Boone County 4-H and a four-year member of Columbia FFA.
Held in Columbia during spring break, the free camp helps middle school students identify their strengths and interests, explore jobs and careers that might fit their strengths, and visit a variety of college and technical school campuses. It is particularly geared toward middle school students who will be the first in their families to attend college, says Rebecca Mott, director of Camp CA-POW (College Access-Planning Our Way).
Rankin, a Camp CA-POW intern for three years, was able to raise nearly $4,300 to contribute to a scholarship fund established in 2017 by Matt and Alyssa Praiswater, who also had served as interns at the camp.
“Numerous Boone County organizations, businesses and individuals donated toward the purchase of the lamb to make Rankin’s dream of contributing to the scholarship fund a reality,” Mott says. Students who participate in Camp CA-POW will be able to apply for a scholarship to the college or technical school of their choice when they are high school seniors.
“Camp CA-POW and the students I have worked with the last three years have shown me new perspectives on the world and more about myself than I could have ever asked for,” Rankin says. “I could not imagine where I would be at now if I had not helped at Camp CA-POW. This camp can change lives, whether it is the lives of the middle school students attending or the university student interns helping.”
Rankin will graduate from MU in May 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education and leadership. After graduation, she plans to teach agriculture in a Missouri high school.
Camp CA-POW is a collaboration of MU Extension Youth and Families, Missouri 4-H, the MU Family Impact Center and the MU College of Education. For more information, contact Rebecca Mott at 573-882-2428 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or visit mufamilyimpact.org.
